Student laptops are usually what people would describe as value line or cheap. Students don't possess an unlimited amount of money usually so they have to be clever when choosing their computer. Business class is obviously out of question so I thought I'd take a look and see if I can advise something people on the budget can make use of.
These people usually don't have high expectations about their computer system so let's assume the job we'll have to find a candidate for is going to be word processing, spreadsheet so basically standard office use with some gaming to let the steam go. I'll also take low budget granted. Our first of the laptops for students is a notebook from the factories of HP.
HP G60-630us
First thing worth mentioning I think is that this notebook has an unusually powerful processor compared to the counterparts and a quite spacious hard disk too. We don't have conclusive data on battery life, but since it has a 6 cell battery I'm going to take an educated guess for 2-3 hours of frame between charges given light use. The heart of the machine is a 2.2 ghz two headed monster from Intel (t4400), which in english means that it is going to be fast and snappy. 3 gigabytes of memory is installed by default, there is no use for more on 32 bit operating systems anyway so I'm going to settle for an A here, well done. 320 gb hdd and 1366x768 screen size pretty much predestines this computer to be the media center of the dorm room. I am happy how HP managed to make a good all arounder for $530.
Asus 1005HA
The next comp I'd like to propose for the role is an Asus 1005HA. I can almost hear what you say, yes I know this is not even a laptop, but hang on for a second.. This little monster has a 1.6ghz single core processor and a gigabyte of ram along with a 10⬝ screen. The 1005HA-M has matte, the HA-H version has glossy screen, not that it matters much I just thought it'd be good to know. The thing that sells this computer to students is the 8 hours of battery life for HA-M and 10 hours for HA-H. For less than $400 it is astonishing to have a computer that is able to take notes, play movies, browse the net for almost a whole day. Great investment.
Last but not least a workhorse from stables of Dell:
Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6
There is nothing really interesting about this configuration but we are looking for the best price to value ratio anyway, aren't we. Decent 2.1 ghz cpu, 4 gb memory, and a 250 gb hdd takes care of getting the show going, and I wouldn't say it is anything to be ashamed of. 15.6⬝ screen is installed and dell claims this unit to run for 4.5 hours on a single charge so I would safely advise buying this as an university companion.
These are probably not the best laptops for students and I'm sure I've left a few computers out of the list, and I haven't mentioned macs. Reason being that they're way out of the league as far as price goes but the ones I mentioned are definitely worth buying.
